February 7 – Our Lady of Lourdes Each year over 2 million people make their way through the mountainous country of southeastern France to Lourdes. They come seeking cures, hoping to find answers, believing, and praying. At Lourdes, people recall the Lady dressed in white, with a blue sash, yellow roses at her feet, and a Rosary on her arm—the Blessed Virgin Mary. On February 11, 1858, Mary appeared to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. This was the first of 18 visits, many of them with 20,000 people present. When Bernadette asked the Lady’s identity, she replied, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” The Blessed Virgin, through Bernadette, had come to call sinners to a change of heart. Her message was a request for prayer and penance. She also instructed Bernadette to tell the priests that a chapel was to be built on the site and processions held.
February 8 – Chinese New Year Chinese New Year 2016 will be a year of the Monkey, part of an ancient tradition in which the Chinese zodiac attaches animal signs to each lunar year in a cycle of 12 years. Often, the evening preceding Chinese New Year's Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual
reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red color
paper-cuts and
couplets with popular themes of
"good fortune" or "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity". Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in
red paper envelopes.

February 9 – Mardi Gras Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”—that is, the final day before the penitential season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. While Mardi Gras has no official status in the Catholic Church, it is a custom in many Catholic countries to mark the day with parties and feasting, in particular eating those foods from which one will fast during Lent.

February 10 – Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Ash Wednesday is a day of penitential prayer and fasting and marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. The next 40 days focus on penance, prayer, reflection, fasting and almsgiving as we acknowledge the ways we have distanced ourselves from God in our lives and focus on turning our hearts and minds back toward God.
