✙ November 24 - Memorial of Saint Andrew Dũng-Lac, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs
Andrew Dung-Lac was one of 117 people martyred in Vietnam between 1820 and 1862. Members of this group were beatified on four different occasions between 1900 and 1951. All were canonized by St. John Paul II. St. Andrew Dung-Lac’s name was originally Dung An Tran, and he was born about 1795 in a poor and pagan family in North Vietnam. When he was twelve the family had to move to Hanoi where his parents could find work. There he met a catechist who provided food, shelter and an education. Eventually he was baptized with the Christian name Andrew.

On March 15, 1823 he was ordained a priest who was tireless in his preaching. He often fasted and lived a simple and moral life, he was a good example for the people, and many were baptized. Seen as a threat by the government he was arrested several times until his final capture, torture and death on December 21, 1839 for the offense of being a priest.
November 26 – Thanksgiving Day
In a 1789 proclamation, President George Washington called on the people of the United States to acknowledge God for affording them “an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness” by observing a day of thanksgiving. Devoting a day to “public thanksgiving and prayer,” as Washington called it, became a yearly tradition in many communities.
Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863. In that year, during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln made his Thanksgiving Day Proclamation. He asked his fellow citizens to “to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise …”
It was not until 1941 that Congress designated the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day, thus creating a federal holiday.
