All of our volunteers must complete a thorough background check
We began our volunteer program, "PEOPLE NEED FRIENDS" in February, 1990. The purpose of this group is to enhance the lives of the people in our programs by giving them opportunities beyond those our staff alone can provide.
Some of our residents have little or no family connections and few friends outside of the Department. Some express a desire to do things and go places with someone other than those with whom they live or work. "People Need Friends" provides what is needed to help make their lives fuller: things to look forward to, a friend to talk with or share interests with and perhaps most of all, someone to matter to beyond just the caring staff of the home.
Since all the people in the Department go to work each day, friends plan their activities in the evenings or on week-ends. Their activities include such things as shopping, miniature golf, trips to museums and places of interest, a ball game, Sunday Mass, followed by breakfast, hours together in the homes of the volunteers, baking, cooking, arts and crafts, window shopping at the mall, etc. In short, they do the things all friends enjoy doing together. Some of our volunteers spend their time with their friend in the group home or apartment, others spend their hours together out in the community. All of the relationships developed slowly and over a period of time.
